James Robert Johnson was born on August 26, 1929, to Jonas Walfrid and Lillie Frideborg (Sunsten) Johnson at Roseau, MN.  His family moved to St. Paul, MN, where Robert attended school.  On January 30, 1952, he entered the United States Army, serving until January 6, 1954, and was honorably discharged.  After his military service, Robert worked in Roseau, MN, at his uncle's car dealership as a mechanic.

On October 1, 1955, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Hoffman at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Roseau, MN.  In 1961, they moved to Thief River Falls, MN, to work at Polar Manufacturing (later Arctic Cat).  Robert worked in the shop and later moved to the purchasing agent.  In 1995, Robert retired from Arctic Cat.  In their retirement years, they enjoyed traveling.

Robert was very conscious about his health and those around him.  Walking, riding, and exercising kept him busy.  He enjoyed exploring and hiking in the mountains.  His "bucket list" included climbing Machu Picchu in Peru and walking the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.  In early 2000, Robert completed his bucket list by climbing Machu Picchu Mountain in Peru; and later walked across the Golden Gate Bridge with his friend Larry Franck.  For many years, Robert and Mary traveled worldwide.  As Mary puts it, "I have been to the North Pole been to the South Pole and stood on the Equator, but I have never been to Africa."

Robert is survived by his wife, Mary, Thief River Falls, MN; four cousins, and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers- Philip, Ruben, David, and sisters- Lynn, Maureen, Ruby, Hannah and Irene.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Heritage Center, Thief River Falls, MN, Pennington County Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
