Robert Nustvold, 75, of Spring Valley, MN, died peacefully on October 22, 2010 at The Pillars Hospice Home in Oakdale, MN.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Silver Creek Church in rural Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend John Golv officiating. Burial will be at Silver Creek Church following the service.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday.
Robert Joseph Nustvold was born on April 1, 1935 in Minneapolis, MN, the son of Clifford and Elizabeth (Helstrom) Nustvold. He was baptized and confirmed in Minneapolis at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church. Robert attended school at South High School in Minneapolis. Roberts grandfather and grandmother, George and Jorgine (Klungnes) Nustvold, settled in the Thief River Falls area in the early 1900s. His great grandparents, Anton and Elisabeth Nustvold, emigrated from Norway to rural Marshall, MN with their children including George in the 1880s. Robert spent summers in Thief River Falls as a teeneager since he was 12 with his fathers cousins, Amanda and Irv Russell helping out on the turkey farm that they owned.
Robert entered the United States Navy on Oct. 12, 1953. He proudly served his country during the Korean War and was part of the Fighting SeaBees (Mobile Construction Battalion) and served in countries including the Philippines and Guam. He was Honorably Discharged on Oct. 11, 1957, after completing his term of active obligated service, and continued listed as a reserve member through Sept. 5, 1960.
On June 22, 1957, Robert was united in marriage to Shirley Arata in Santa Barbra, CA while he was still in the service. Robert and Shirley made their home and raised their family of seven children together in Bloomington, MN. He worked his entire life in the elevator industry and was a proud member of Local # 9 Elevator Union. In the 80s, he retired due to a medical condition.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley of Spring Valley, WI; six children, Brian Nustvold, Susan Nustvold, Linda (Dennis) Schumann, Kurt (Terri) Nustvold, Daniel (Elizabeth) Nustvold and Heidi Nustvold; 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; brothers, Ronald Nustvold and Richard Nustvold; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, David; his parents, one sister, Geraldine Kopacek
