Roger Ray Peterson, age 68, Thief River Falls, MN died Friday, June 20, 2014 at his residence, Thief River Falls, MN. Roger was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer December of 2010. He battled metastasized cancer till called H-O-M-E. The funeral service to celebrate the life of Roger Peterson will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 23, 2014 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Rev. Greg Schram officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will be held 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service with Pastor Irvin Schmitke officiating on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM on Monday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Roger was born to Norman and Mildred (Wold) Peterson on August 10, 1945. He grew up on a farm in Sanders Township near Thief River Falls, MN. Roger attended St. Hilaire School through grade 8, transferring to Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls where he graduated in 1963 as a member of the National Honor Society. He also achieved the honor of National Athletic Honor Society for playing football. Roger entered the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND the fall of 1963. He graduated in June of 1968 with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. In July of 2000, he received his Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Bemidji State College. Roger was a loving and caring individual always putting others needs before his own. Roger was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and had a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior. He served God, family, church, and others always in that order. Roger married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Vigness, on August 20, 1966. Together they raised two sons, Todd and Troy. Roger held several jobs during his lifetime. While in high school he did some construction work, helped on his family's farm, and worked at Fleet Farm Supply. While attending college he worked as lab assistant in the drafting department at UND and a drafter at Minnkota Power Co. After graduation he received employment at IBM in Rochester, MN. He worked there as an engineer designing computers for two years and then accepted a job with the Thief River Falls Area Vocational School teaching electronics. The school has changed its name to Northland College and Technical School where Roger was the senior instructor in computers and electronics for thirty-six years, retiring May of 2006. Roger was instrumental in the beginning of Digi-Key University. He enjoyed teaching Digi-Key night classes for employees until 2010 when he retired due to health. Roger also edited several student and teachers manuals throughout his career. He began a home business, Country Oaks Computing, in 1989 selling and maintaining computer to clients continuing until the time of his death. Roger loved spending time with his family, especially his five grandchildren, hobby farming, deer hunting with family, golfing, traveling, construction work, home repairs, and was often seen with a book in his hand reading and gaining as much knowledge as possible. He was well known for his understanding and easy to talk with personality. Students and co-workers knew they could come to him with their problems and he would always take time to listen and encourage. He loved serving his church where he served as congregational chairman for seventeen years and trustee for several years, taught Sunday School and was a member of the church choir. He installed and operated the sound system for services. He was active on the Galilee Bible Camp Corporation Board for many years, recently serving as president of the corporation. He did several wiring and repair jobs for the camp at Lake Bronson, MN. He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend, Sharon, his sons Todd (Michelle) of Fertile, MN; and Troy (April) of Richmond, MN; Grandchildren: Brittany, Christopher, Ashley, Joshua, and Jeremy. Brothers: Ralph, Leslie (MaryJo), Jim (Gail), Wayne (Naomi), special brother Terry (Renita) Wold, sister-in-law Cathy (Dan) Rominski, brother-in-law Chuck (Wanda) Vigness; Father and Mother-in-law, Clifford and Catherine Vigness; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding him in death was his father whom passed away December of 1991, his mother whom passed away in April of 2014, sister-in-law, Phyllis Peterson, special brother Steve Wold, many uncles, aunts and his grandparents.
