Sandra Sorter of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at the Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 23, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN, with Rev. Kristin Ostercamp officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Visitation will take place one hour prior to the funeral service on Sunday at the church.

Sandra Leone Hiatt was born on February 19, 1942 in Watertown, SD, the daughter of Russell and Signe (Wester) Hiatt.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD.  Sandra attended Watertown High School, graduating in 1960.  In 1963 she graduated from Sioux Valley School of Nursing with an RN degree.  She then went to work in Chamberlain, SD, from 1963 until 1965, then moved to Thief River Falls where she worked at Northwest Medical Center from 1966 to 1970.  From 1970 and on Sandra became the bookkeeper for Sorter Construction until Jim's retirement.

On October 18, 1969 Sandra was united in marriage to James Sorter at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN.  Together they made their home in Thief River Falls and raised three children:  Kevin, Kimberly, and Lisa.  They enjoyed traveling to the Black Hills, Itasca State Park, and looking at Fall foliage.

Sandra was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.  She was a part of circle, women's board, the library, and nursery series.  She was involved in Christian Women's Club and Silverton Homemakers.  Her greatest joy was to spend time at the cabin with her family.  In her free time she enjoyed reading, crafts, puzzles, gardening – especially flowers, watching sports – especially her grandchildren.

Sandra is survived by her husband, James; children, Kevin (Keri) Sorter and Kim (Brian) Van Elsberg; grandchildren, Lindsey Van Elsberg, Katelyn Sorter, Kenzie Sorter, Kora Sorter, Kyle Van Elsberg, and Khloe Sorter; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa; her parents, Russell and Signe Hiatt; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Phil Little; her in-laws, John and Mabel Sorter and brother-in-law, Merle.
