Obituary

Sherman DuRose, a man known for his warmth, humor, and dedication to family and friends, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at the Kittson County Health Care in Hallock, Minnesota. Born on July 6, 1953, in Buffalo, Minnesota, Sherman lived a life marked by hard work, compassion, and a deep connection to those around him.

Sherman graduated from high school in International Falls, MN, and furthered his education by attending aviation school, where he graduated with honors. His career reflected the breadth of his skills and interests. He worked in logging and was known for building log houses in Montana, where he also served as a hunting guide. Later, he contributed to building construction in California before returning to Minnesota. There, Sherman undertook various driving jobs, including milk and concrete trucks, and devoted ten years caring for his father and until 2014 providing care for his mother, showcasing his unwavering dedication to family.

Sherman's personality was as vibrant as his diverse talents. He was a man who loved everybody and prioritized his friends, offering a listening ear and sharing his great sense of humor. Sunday mornings were a special time for him as he listened to four Christian services on the radio, reflecting his spiritual devotion.

Outside of work and family, Sherman enjoyed lawn and outdoor work and was an accomplished guitarist, skilled in playing all kinds of guitars. His talent extended to woodworking, where he and his stepson Austin collaborated on various projects, from cars to boats to woodcraft, creating lasting memories and tangible legacies of their bond. Fishing trips with Sherman and visits to the casino, where he made many friends, were among the treasured memories shared by those who knew him.

Sherman is survived by his significant other, Ramona Sjovall of Karlstad, MN; stepson, Austin (Kira) Lefrooth and their children Rhiannon and Harlan; his children Suzanne (Adam) Lane of Grand Rapids, MN, Stephanie Hageman of Farmington, MN, and Alice DuRose of Grand Forks, ND; his grandchildren Vermillion (Grace Ann) Baker-Lane of Duluth, MN, Logan Lane of Grand Rapids, MN, Thomas Nelson of Fargo, ND; and his brothers, James (Julie) DuRose of Portage, MI, Edwin DuRose of Stanchfield, MN; nieces and nephew, Kimberly (Rodney) Pieper of Portage, MI, Jennifer (Nathan) Horgan of Portage, MI, Christopher DuRose of St. Paul, MN, Catherine Ofstedal of Fargo, ND; several great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. He is lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” and Alice Cleone (Nelson) DuRose; grandparents, Isaac and Fannie (Wilman) Wiita and Edwin and Ingaborg (Tviet) Nelson; son-in-law, Jason Hageman on May 15, 2022; sister, Anitra (Paul) Ofstedal; sister-in-law, Grace DuRose; former spouse, Melanie Sorvig.

Sherman’s proudest accomplishment was reaching the milestone of age 70, a testament to his strength and resilience throughout a life well-lived. His legacy is one of love, dedication, and joyful companionship. He will be deeply missed, yet warmly remembered by family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know him.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM, with a 1:30 PM Service on Friday, June 5, 2026 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Burial will follow at the Mission Cemetery, rural Strandquist.
