Obituary

Sherman Johnson, 90, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Friday October 16, 2020 at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN, with Rev. Ale Tulu officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN.  Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday at the funeral home.

Sherman Curtis Johnson was born on December 27, 1929 on the family farm near Fordville, ND the son of Andrew and Tina (Thompson) Johnson.  He was baptized into the Lutheran faith.  His mother died when Sherman was 2 years old and Sherman was raised by different family members.  He also stayed at a boarding house and went to school in Fordville. In 1937 Sherman moved to Thief River Falls where he attended Northrup Elementary, Knox Elementary and Lincoln High School.

Following high school, Sherman worked as a laborer in the roundhouse and then became a diesel electrician and then a fireman with the Soo Line Railroad. In the summer of '48 he worked construction in Grand Forks.  In 1951 Sherman entered into service with the United States Army at Ft. Knox, KY and was Honorably Discharged.

On July 1, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mona M. Cutt at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN by Reverend Walter Peterson. The couple made their home at 1241 Edgewood Drive, Thief River Falls where they have continued to live.

After being laid off of the railroad, Sherman went to Minneapolis, MN where he went to work for Drywall Engineers.  A few months later, he went to work at the Grand Forks Air Force Base for McGill Drywall for a short time.   In about 1964, Sherman started his own drywall business which he called Johnson Drywall which he owned and operated for over 50 years.

He enjoyed fishing on Lake of The Woods and spending time at his home at Springsteel Resort.  He also enjoyed hunting deer with Hilary Stoltman and their wives near Fourtown, MN, raising dogs and having them as pets.  Sherman and Mona enjoyed traveling; they went to California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Caribbean Islands, Florida, Texas and many other places in the states.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years and the American Legion Post #117 since 1958 in Thief River Falls.

Sherman is survived by his daughter Debra K. (Robert) Holmgren, Thief River Falls; grandchildren Aaron D. Erickson, Thief River Falls, MN and Andrew J. (Dionne) Erickson, Red Lake, MN; great-grandchildren David Erickson, Christopher Erickson, Oliver Erickson, Sherman Erickson and Amos Erickson; sisters-in-law Esther Johnson, Thief River Falls, MN, along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mona; parents, Andrew and Tina; step-mother, Lucille Johnson; brothers, Glen (Betty), Gary (Shelva), Dudley (Judy) and Richard Johnson, sister, Linda (Duane) Brown and sister-in-law, LaVonne Johnson.
