Shirley Freeman Thief River Falls, MN, age 74, died Friday, September 6, 2013 at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, ND with her loving family at her side. Funeral service will held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Karlstad, MN with Pastor Peter Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow at the Karlstad Cemetery in Karlstad, MN. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on Friday, September 13, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Karlstad, MN. Shirley Ann Bogestad was born on May 25, 1939 at home on the family farm in Springbrook Township, Kittson County, MN the daughter of Albin and Alice (Anderson) Bogestad. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Karlstad, MN. Shirley attended school in Karlstad and graduated from high school in 1957. Following high school, Shirley worked at the Engen Drug Store in Karlstad. At a dance in Halma, MN in 1958, Shirley met her future husband, Duane Freeman. They were united in marriage on March 17, 1962 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Karlstad. They made their home in St. Paul, MN for a short time and then returned to live in Thief River Falls, MN where they have continued to reside. To this union three children were born, Tami, Tari and Chris. Shirley stayed home with the kids while they were growing and in 1980 went to work at Northwest ECSU. She worked in the media department until her retirement in 2003. She and Duane enjoyed traveling to different locations throughout the United States. Shirley also enjoyed crossword puzzles, flower & vegetable gardening, cooking, playing cards, spending time on the internet and especially enjoyed time with her family. Shirley was a very kind and caring woman who would help anyone. Shirley was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Karlstad, MN, American Legion Auxiliary and the Eagle's Club. Survivors include her loving husband of 51 years, Duane of Thief River Falls, MN; children, Tami Freeman of Grand Forks, ND, Tari (Jay) Jonson of West Fargo, ND, Chris (Aida) Freeman of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Alicia & Tiffany Helle, Katie, Andrew, Nora & Mara Jonson, Isabelle Freeman; great-granddaughter, Kari; brother, Gary (Karen) Bogestad of Rockport, TX; and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother, Brian; and niece, Shanna.
