Stanley Hofstad, 74, died on Monday, July 4, 2005 at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, MN.
Stanley (Stan) Gordon Hofstad was born April 12, 1930, the oldest child of Osmund and Marie (Johnson) Hofstad. Born in Grand Forks, ND, he was baptized on May 12, 1930, at the Bygland Lutheran Church by Rev. Halvor Lee. Stan lived in rural Grand Forks with his family, attending the Duckworth School until October 1943 when the family moved north of Oklee, MN. Stan was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, again by Rev. Halvor Lee, at Clearwater Church, rural Oklee. Stan attended and graduated from Oklee High School in 1948. After high school he worked for various farmers around Grafton, ND.
In 1951 Stan enlisted in the US Marine Corps, serving in Korea from1953-54 during the Korean Conflict. He served with the MAG 33 " Marine Aircraft Support Group " as an equipment operator. Two of the pilots who flew out this group were John Glenn and Ted Williams, flying F-9 aircraft at the time. Stan was honorably discharged on Nov 5, 1954, with the rank of sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal with two stars, United Nations Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
After the service Stan worked for six years in Milwaukee, WI, at BE (Bucyrus-Erie), a dragline/heavy equipment manufacturer. In 1963 he returned to Oklee and farmed the home farm from 1963 to 1983, raising small grain and dairy.
In 1983 Stan moved to Fergus Falls. He entered Fergus Falls Community College, graduating with an Associate of Arts Degree at the age of 59. After college Stan worked as a counselor at a half way house for two years. He then worked as a paraprofessional in the library at the Fergus Falls Middle School for nine years, retiring in 2002.
Stan died July 4, 2005, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 22 days, after a long struggle with emphysema and kidney disease. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Oklee, MN, and the Plummer American Legion.
Stanley is survived by brothers Orlando (Jean) of Mary Esther, FL, Leslie (Alice) of Plummer, MN, Raymond (Jayne) of Buffalo, MN; by sisters Lois (Bobby) Westmoreland of Shreveport, LA, Doris (Wallace) Nelson of Oklee, MN, Elaine Brokker of Grafton, ND, Carol (Kerry) Roisland of Grand Forks, ND; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and brother Paul in 1963.
