Obituary

Theodore Hellie, 86, died on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls, MN.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, May 1, 2006 at United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Reverend Phil Schmidt officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.

Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a 5:00 P.M. prayer service on Sunday evening and at the church for one hour prior to service on Monday.

Theodore Quintin Hellie was born on August 22, 1919 in rural Goodridge, MN, the son of T. G. and Marie (Olson) Hellie. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at the Rosendal Lutheran Church in rural Goodridge.

He attended rural Pershing School District #48 through 8th grade and Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, graduating in 1938. Following High School he attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls for two years. He transferred to the University of Minnesota and attended until he was inducted into the United States Army Air Force from 1942-1946. From Fort Snelling he went to Sheppard Field, TX, then to Scott Field, IL and Atlantic City. He was then sent to Camp Kilmer, NJ and then to England to a Royal Air Force Radio Location Station, near Wirksworth, Derbyshire, where he met his future wife, Rosemary Jean Slater. He was in Wirksworth 28 months and he later married Jean in Minneapolis on August 11, 1950.

Ted returned to the University of Minnesota to complete his education, graduating in 1951. He was hired by W. G. Claffy, Lincoln High School Superintendent, to teach English. Ted taught for 30 years before retiring. While at Lincoln he was advisor for the year book for several years. Ted was also time-keeper and announcer for hockey and football for many years. Ted was a member of Retired Teachers, Golden Kiwanis, United Methodist Church, American Legion, Thief River Falls Golf Club, where he was manager for many years during summer months. His interests were golf, spectator sports, gardening and he was an avid reader. Ted loved to travel with his wife, Jean. The couple visited many foreign countries, went back to Wirksworth many times and visited most of the United States. He was also on the Meals on Wheels Board for several years.

Ted is survived by his wife, Jean of Thief River Falls, MN; children: Diane Hellie of Rochester, Susan (Bob) Sanders of Omaha, Nebraska and Jim (Nancy) Hellie of Thief River Falls, MN; grandson, Justin Sanders; step grandsons: Nicholas and Zachary Twamley; nephew, Richard Hellie of Chicago, IL; and nieces: Verona Hellie (Jay) McKinstry of Buffalo, MN, Margaret Hellie (Tom) Huyck of Chicago, IL, and Carol Hellie of Chula Vista, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, James, Ole, Harvey, Gunder, Gustaf and Mayer and two nephews.
