Thora "Tillie" (Nesland) Askeland, 96, of Warroad, MN formerly of Grygla, MN passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013 at the Warroad Care Center in Warroad, MN surrounded by her loving family. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with Reverend Vicky Saude-Worthington presiding. Burial will be held at Valle Cemetery at Grygla. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Thora Tillie Nesland was born June 7, 1917 at Grygla, MN daughter of the late Mikkel and Gunda (Roisland) Nesland. She was raised near Grygla and attended country school. Tillie moved to Thief River Falls where she worked for families in their homes. On June 7, 1941 she was united in marriage to Orville Askeland at Grygla, MN. The couple made their home at Grygla. She worked in the "Pool Hall" which was a family restaurant. In the mid fifty's she began cooking at the Grygla School for a time. To this union one daughter was born Elaine in 1948. Tillie enjoyed sewing making all the clothing, embroidery and quilting, cooking, baking and making lefse, gardening, canning and her flower gardening. Her four legged friend Friskie was special to her after nursing her back to health after being shot. Most of all she enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Ladies group. Tillie is survived by her daughter Elaine (Cal) Naslund of Salol, MN: grandchildren Terri (Scott) Snyder of Warroad, MN and Christopher (Nikisha) Mellstrom of Malung, MN: 9 great-grandchildren Robert, Caleb, Ashley and Madilyn Mellstrom, Jason, KateLynne, Nathan, Darian and Brian Snyder. One sister Bunny DuChamp of Plummer, MN; sister-in-law Stella Nesland at Thief River Falls, MN along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Orville, parents Mikkel and Gunda Nesland, brothers Torkel, Targie, Ole and Knute: sisters Julia Clausen, Gertie Haugen, Terry Blaine. Brothers-in-law Floyd Clausen, Sam Haugen, Jesse Duchamp and Alvin Blaine; sister-in-law Stella Nesland. ORGANIST: Joy Nordby SOLOIST: Rev.
