On Sat., Oct 24, starting at 10 AM there will be a Visitation/Memorial Service in Slayton MN at the Totsky Funeral Home. Velma will be laid to rest alongside her husband (married 60 years), Allen Victor Carl Knollenberg , at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Iona, MN. In celebration of Velma's life, the family would encourage everyone to wear bright colored clothing and lots of jewelry to the services. It is a happy occasion for mom, as she lived a full life and we want to remember the happy times we had with her! Velma Almira Skott was born on December 3, 1923 in Vermillion, SD, the daughter of August and Anna (Voelpell) Skott. Velma attended elementary school in Wetonka, SD, boarding school in Mina, SD, and high school in Madison, WI. Throughout the years she worked as a beautician, and in downtown Minneapolis in a jewelry store. On May 30, 1951 Velma was united in marriage to Allen Victor Carl Knollenberg and they had two children, Shari and Kirk. They raised their family in Golden Valley where they continued to live for 55 years. When Alzheimer's disease struck, Allen and Velma were moved to Thief River Falls to be cared for by family members. For five years family care continued, but in 2010 they were transferred to a Memory Care Home in East Grand Forks, MN. Following Allen's death in 2011, Velma returned to live in Thief River Falls where she continued to reside in Oakland Park and TRF Care Centers. Velma was lovingly known as "Skotty". She enjoyed playing cards (Bridge, 500), Scrabble, reading, antiquing, dancing (Arthur Murray Dance Studio), and camping with her family and camping group. She served as a Brownie Leader and Sunday School Teacher. She is survived by two children: Shari (Steve) Allyn Westerman and Kirk Scott Knollenberg; grandchildren: Kasian Westerman, Michaela "Miko"(Gary) Hancock, Joaquin (Michelle) Westerman, Josiah (Millicent) Westerman, Skyah Westerman, and Kyle Knollenberg; step-grandchildren: Michele(Shelly) Knollenberg-Dvorak, Laurie Knollenberg-Long, Cori Compton-Knollenberg; great-grandchildren: Laadyn Westerman, Jonas Westerman, Carsten Westerman, Emma Westerman, Jaiven Westerman, Kinley Westerman, Jackson and Quinn Westerman, Emery Westerman, baby girl Westerman (due very soon!), Christianson and Kami Knollenberg; brother, LaVerne (Donna) Skott; and many nieces and nephews, and friends.
