Obituary

Viola "Vi" Melvie passed away into the loving arms of her heavenly Father on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Essentia Hospital in Fargo, ND at the age of 70. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 3, 2011 at New Hope Church in Newfolden, MN with Reverend Ollie Urdahl officiating and Reverend Jim Robberstad Co-officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service on Thursday evening and also at the church for one hour prior to the service on Friday. Viola Ann Scott was born on February 28, 1941 in Langdon, ND the daughter of Donald Sr. and Evelyn (Buntjer) Scott. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. The family moved often, and eventually settled in the Thief River Falls, MN area. Vi remained in Langdon to care for her uncle and joined the family later. She finished her senior year in Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1960. She attended Vocational school for bookkeeping and then worked at Union State Bank as a bookkeeper for 2 years. She met her future husband, Erwin Melvie, at choir practice in Viking, MN. Viola and Erwin were married on July 20, 1963 in Thief River Falls. They lived on the Melvie family farm in rural Viking Township, Marshall County, where they raised their family of 4 children: Sherri, Alan, Jill and Joel. In addition to raising the children, Vi worked at Viking Elementary School as a kitchen aide and also helped her husband with his mail routes and gravel business. In 1983 Vi received her Home Health Aide certification from Northland Community and Technical College and worked the next 28 years as a Home Health Aide, beginning with Marshall County Nursing Service and ending with Altru Health System Home Services. Vi retired from full-time work on March 31, 2011 but didn't stay idle for long. She earned her Certified Nursing Assistant certification and began part-time work for Good Samaritan Society on April 25, 2011. Vi cared for many people throughout her 28 years, and she loved her work and her clients very much. They said she had healing hands and a way with everyone. Vi attended New Hope Church in Newfolden, MN and enjoyed the Ladies events there and in other communities. She loved gardening, reading, watching the Twins games and anything to do with animals and nature, listening to music, watching the birds at her many feeders, and keeping up with her grandsons many sports events and family activities. Vi loved to cook and bake and shared her hospitality with all who dropped by to visit. She grew the most beautiful gladiolas and peonies and generously shared them with friends and family. She loved getting cards and letters, and was always sending lovely handwritten notes or cards or letters to someone. Vi is survived by her husband, Erwin of Viking, MN; children, Sherri Melvie of Viking, MN, Alan Melvie and son Logan of Crookston, MN, Jill (Kevin) Thompson and son Adam of Park Rapids, MN, and Joel Melvie of Thief River Falls, MN; sisters, Donna Rux of Thief River Falls, MN and Betty Brownlee of Hurst, TX; brothers, Donald Jr. (Cheryl) Scott of St. Hilaire, MN, Ken (Linda) Scott of Thief River Falls, MN, Raymond (Cindy) Scott of Red Lake Falls, MN, and Richard (Mikki) Scott of St. Hilaire, MN; her nieces and nephews, and many relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and infant sister, Lois.
