Obituary

Virginia "Ginny" Armstrong, 75 of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Friday, May 10, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. John Golv and Rev. Ale Tulu officiating. Burial will be at St. Pauli Church Cemetery, rural Thief River Falls.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Virginia "Ginny" Kaye Finstad was born August 29, 1943 in Thief River Falls, MN the daughter of Martin L. and Julia Cecelia (Malmquist) Finstad.  She was baptized at St. Pauli Lutheran Church and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.  She attended one year of Cheeryville School and then to school in Thief River Falls, MN.  In 1961, Ginny graduated from Lincoln High School.

On April 6, 1963, Ginny was united in marriage to Joseph Gerald Armstrong.  The couple lived in California for 2 years and Florida for one winter.  They then returned to Thief River Falls, MN and bought the Finstad farm where they raised small grains and beef cattle. She also owned and operated Ginny's Beauty Shop in Thief River Falls.

Ginny was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent & Teacher, was the chairman of Public Relations and Parish Fellowship; served on the Mission Committee, Health Board, Parish Planning Council, Vice-President and Treasurer of Zion Lutheran Church; and President and Treasurer of ZLCW, Education Secretary and Chair of the Lydia Circle; and was very active in the kitchen and also served as the funeral lunch coordinator.

She was active in Girl Scouts for 35 years and held most volunteer positions including a member of the Board of Directors, Service Unit Chair, Outdoor Properties Committee, Outdoor Trainer, and was very supportive of Camp M.O.E.  Ginny was a board member on the Northwest Minnesota Healthcare Purchasing Alliance, Penn-Mar-Red Agri Women, Harvest of Knowledge Board, Area Food Shelf Board Treasurer, President of Hospital Auxiliary, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Board Member, and volunteered for RSVP.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, anything outdoors, gardening, mowing, doing volunteer work, traveling, and especially her family. She especially enjoyed taking her family to Hawaii.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Lynell (Bob) Wayne and Nicolle (Chris) Ellison all of Thief River Falls, MN; 4 grandchildren: Erica (Jon) Hruby, Erin, Caitlynn and Brianne; great-granddaughter, Raelynn; 2 sisters: Janice Breiland, Thief River Falls, MN and Bonnie (Alan) Altman, Berthoud, CO; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Galen) Pederson of Ft. Collins, CO, Ellen (Wallace) Johnson of Detroit Lakes, MN, Agnes Selin of Red Lake Falls, MN, Janice "Dolly" Armstrong of Lander, WY, Janet Armstrong of Fisher, MN; brother-in-law, David (Rosie) Armstrong of Euclid, MN; and many nieces & nephews.

Ginny was preceded in death by husband, Joe in 2003; infant daughter; parents; sister-in-law, Esther Cota; brothers-in-law, Donald Breiland, Charles Armstrong, Arthur Armstrong and Harry Armstrong.
