She was baptized and confirmed on May 28, 1939 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended Rosehill country school, Washington Elementary, Central school and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. As a child, Vivian loved playing with her many cousins at her grandparent's farm in Rocksbury Township. The "big house" held so many treasured memories for her. Vivian was very active in 4-H clubs while she was in school, and was voted Style Queen of the 1942 Pennington County Fair. She was also an accomplished pianist. After high school, Vivian worked as a secretary for L.B. Hartz and also for the local State Farm Insurance agent. Vivian was united in marriage to the love of her life, Bob Carlson, on November 6, 1946. After the birth of their son, Rod, in 1948, and their daughter, Lori, in 1953, Vivian was happy to be a stay-at-home mom. In 1962, she returned to work and began her employment at Union State Bank. While at the bank, she started in bookkeeping and worked her way up to teller, head teller, and teller supervisor. She retired as assistant vice-president from Wells Fargo in 1986. Vivian was an active member of the Noon Lioness Club for many years, holding several officer positions. She was also a volunteer at the local food shelf and served as an election judge. Vivian and Bob were members of Zion Lutheran Church. They enjoyed traveling, especially with their family, and took many trips around the U.S. and were also able to go to Europe and Australia. Vivian's main interest throughout her life was her family, most of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her loving family: son, Rod (Joni) Carlson, Sioux Falls, SD, daughter, Lori (Mike) Carpenter, Thief River Falls, MN; five grandchildren: Angie (Tory Apps) Chalmers, Sara (Ross) Anderson, Erik (Brooke) Carlson, Dan (Sara) Carpenter and Beth (Tyler) Radniecki; eleven great grandchildren: Cameron and Austin Anderson, Alivia and Luke Carlson, Jace Chalmers and Morgan, T.J. and Sierra Apps, Aiden and Delyla Carpenter, and Brody Radniecki, She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, in 2012, her parents, and brothers Kenny and Connie Engelstad. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
