Walter Lunsetter Gatzke, MN died on Tuesday evening, November 19, 2013 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the United Lutheran Church in Gatzke, MN with Rev. Craig Bowyer officiating. Burial will follow at the Landstad Cemetery, rural Gatzke, MN. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7:00 PM prayer service on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN. Visitation will also be held from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM on Saturday at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke. Walter LeRoy Lunsetter was born on October 28, 1915 at home on the family farm in Rollis Township, Marshall County near Gatzke, MN. He was the youngest of nine children born to Hans Albert and Hilda Beatha (Jornlin) Lunsetter. Walter was baptized on November 19, 1915 and confirmed on September 29, 1929 at the Landstad Lutheran Church near Gatzke, MN. He attended the country school near Gatzke and attended the Agricultural College in Crookston, MN graduating in 1932. On June 29, 2009, Walter received the Northwest School of Agriculture Alumni Association Top Aggie Award, on the U of M, Crookston Campus. Following graduation, Walter returned to the Lunsetter Family Farm which was homesteaded by his father and established in 1897 in Rollis Township, they farmed small grains and raised dairy cattle. On November 28, 1944, Walter was united in marriage to Mable Annette Olofson in Roseau, MN. To this union four children were born, Muriel, Bruce, Jeanette and Richard. They continued to live on the family farm and from 1959 until 1972 Walter also worked road construction in Minneapolis, MN. The farm is now owned and operated by Walter's son, Bruce and his sons. Walter was an active member of the United Lutheran Church in Gatzke serving several years on the church council and helping to build the present church when it was constructed in 1956. He was a charter member of the Gatzke Senior Citizens and has served as the club's treasurer for over 25 years. His membership in the Farmer's Union goes back to the 1950s. Walter has supported both his church and community in countless ways over his lifetime. He enjoyed farming, going to auction sales, singing, reading, crossword puzzles, playing rook, keeping up with his kids, grandkids, & great-grandkids, cutting wood, and riding his ranger to see how the farming operation was going. He also enjoyed 4:00 PM coffee at Muriel's home along with Bruce. Walter was the go-to person for local history in the Gatzke area. Over the years, he has contributed to historical records for both the Minnesota and Marshall County historical societies. He had a deep respect for history and he was known for his incredible memory. Walter has been described as a selfless servant of God, his neighbors, and his community, always done with a great sense of humor. Survivors include his three children, Muriel (Rick) Larson, Bruce (Diane) Lunsetter all of Gatzke and Jeanette (Mike) McQuillan of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Jackie Monson, Cindy (Terry) Lee, Scott (Kim) Larson, Jerod (Tara) Lunsetter, Justin Lunsetter, Jamie (Jaci) Lunsetter, Jesse Lunsetter, Chad (Heidi) McQuillan, Mark (Dawn) McQuillan, John (Toni) McQuillan, and Ann (Paul) Jarvis; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mildred (Reuben) Kilbo and Mildred Olofson; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mable; son, Richard; parents; brothers, Melvin and Norman; and sisters, Selma, Alma, Stella, Hazel, Nettie, and Esther.
