Wilma Olson, 84, of Thief River Falls, MN died on Friday, December 6, 2013 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Abundant Life Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend Michael Johnson Officiating. Burial will be held at Greenwood cemetery at Thief River Falls. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Wilma Marie Zavoral was born June 29, 1929, at Erie, Minnesota, the daughter of Emil and Hannah (Baird) Zavoral. She was raised in the Highlanding/Goodridge area and attended rural school. She graduated from Goodridge High School in 1947. She worked as a legal secretary for attorneys Stan Mortenson and Curtis Charlson in Thief River Falls, and then for the Farmers Home Administration in Baudette, Minnesota. While at a New Year's Eve party at the Eagles Club in Thief River Falls, Wilma was asked to draw a name out of a hat for the door prize. She selected Gordon Olson Jr., who became her husband. When asked "Mom, where did you meet Dad?" she replied that she'd won him in a drawing. They were married on November 21, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. The couple bought land west of Thief River Falls and then moved to Babbit for three years where Gordon worked in the mines until returning home to build a home and start farming. Gordon passed away on May 19, 1981. In 1988, Wilma moved into Thief River Falls where she has resided since. Wilma was a proud member of the Good Cheer Club as well as a 4H leader and a Sunday School teacher when her children were young. She was a founding member of the Abundant Life Church of Thief River Falls and served as parish secretary there for several years. Twice a week, Wilma baked bread like no one else, and she made countless memorable meals for family and friends. Wilma also enjoyed painting, gardening, sewing, and quilting. She traveled throughout the U.S. and attended the first several years of WeFest with "the girls." Most of all, Wilma enjoyed taking care of and spoiling her grandchildren. Wilma is survived by her children Kathryn Olson; Scott (Margaret) Olson; and Jane (Murray) Anderson all of Thief River Falls, MN; Bryan (Polly) Olson of Detroit Lakes, MN. Grandchildren: Cayler (Lyndsey) Olson of Harwood, ND; Beth Olson of Grand Forks, ND; Ana (Richard) Laager, and Maxwell, William, and Emma Anderson all of Thief River Falls, MN. Great-grandchildren: Kira and Madison Olson of Harwood, ND; Brother-in-law Orville Janzen of Fargo, ND, and sister-in-law Betty Olson of Thief River Falls, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon, sisters Alice Nelson and Gladys Janzen. Brothers-in-law Lawrence, Glen, Norman, Kenneth, Chester, Donald Olson and Gene Nelson. Sisters-in-law Marie Olson, Alinda Olson, Lilas Klefstad and Leona Olson.
